55-Inch Pull-Down TV Mount Installation Over Fireplace With Metal Studs in Arlington, VA

The Project
The homeowner wanted a 55-inch television mounted directly above the fireplace using a pull-down motion mount. The goal was to keep the TV visually centered over the fireplace while still providing the ability to lower the screen when viewing.
Pull-down mounts are especially useful for televisions positioned above a mantel because they allow the screen to move downward from its normal resting position. The Challenge: Metal Studs Did Not Align With the Pull-Down Mount
During the installation, the fireplace wall was found to contain metal studs rather than a conventional wood-stud layout.
One usable stud was positioned near the center of the fireplace, while the other available studs were located much closer to the outside edges of the fireplace structure.
The wall plate of the pull-down mount was not wide enough to engage two of those studs while also remaining centered. If the bracket had been shifted far enough to reach another stud directly, the television would have ended up visibly off-center over the fireplace.
Because the customer specifically wanted the TV centered, the existing stud spacing could not be allowed to determine the final mounting position.
The Solution: Custom Wood Backing Across Three Metal Studs
Instead of moving the television away from the center of the fireplace, Artesoft created a larger mounting surface using a solid wood backer.
The wood backing was installed across the fireplace wall so that it could reach the three available metal-stud locations. This created a continuous mounting surface across the area where the pull-down bracket needed to be installed.
Once the backer was secured, the pull-down bracket could be positioned on the backing itself rather than being limited to the original spacing of the metal studs.
This approach allowed the TV to remain centered over the fireplace while giving the mounting system a broader structural attachment area.
The Finished Result
The completed installation kept the 55-inch TV centered above the fireplace while preserving the functionality of the customer's pull-down mount.
Rather than compromising the finished position because of the existing framing layout, the custom backing allowed the bracket position and the structural attachment points to be handled separately.
